Private Charles Albert Lovell Humphreys, 37th Batallion

by Julie Carrington

Charles was born December 1886 in Darlinghurst, New South Wales and was aged 30 at time of death. He was the son of Thomas Bosworth Humphreys and Margaret Ann Jane Humphreys. Charles was from my fraternal grandmother's family line. He is my 2nd great grand uncle.

He left Sydney on 9 November 1916 on the HMAT Benalla, Ship number: A24. He died on the 8th June 1917 at Messines, Belgium. He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Belgium.

As Charles was not married at the time of his death and had no living offspring, we would like to be the ones to acknowledge and remember him for his service to our great country.

On a recent school excursion with her primary school students, my daughter placed a poppy in the Wall of Remembrance at the Australian War Memorial next to his name. Before leaving for Canberra she encouraged her students to research their fallen soldiers and she helped them to find their name and place a poppy. We have decided that even though Charles had no direct line of family that are alive, we would remember him through our branch for his ultimate sacrifice.
