About Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies

The AIGS was founded in 1973 to assist its members to undertake family history research in Victoria and the other states of Australia, England, Scotland and Ireland as well as other countries. There is an extensive Library at Blackburn, Victoria where volunteer Library Assistants are available to assist members and visitors with their family research. Special interest groups hold their own monthly meetings in the Library at Blackburn e.g. Northern Counties, Military, Scotland, etc. 'The Genealogist’, the magazine of the AIGS, is published every quarter.

An annual award for the best family history published in Australia known as the Alexander Henderson Award was created in 1973. In memory of its founding President, the Don Grant Award for the best Australian historical biography with a family history focus will be introduced in 2012.

The Library holds an extensive range of books, magazines, microfiche, microfilms and cds covering all aspects of family history research. The Library has strong collections of the following records:
• Family histories
• Victorian local histories
• English parish registers
• British nonconformist records
• British India records

Access to several online databases is provided free to members on the Library computers. Many volunteers are engaged in indexing projects such as the Crown Land grantees and the Parliamentary Papers of Victoria.

Additional services include obtaining overseas birth, marriage and death certificates and wills; a research and look-up service; sterling cheques; will transcriptions, Starting Out classes and One-on-One tuition. Country, interstate and international members are entitled to two hours of free research annually. Members may add their surname interests to the AIGS Surnames database.
