Arthur Ernest Dunn
by Jean Lapthorne
Story 24
My father Arthur Ernest Dunn had kept a diary from the time he left Melbourne 8 May 1915 until he returned 10 April 1917. He served in the 24th Batt. as a stretcher bearer. I was at my Grand daughter's wedding and speaking with an uncle of Amy's by marriage on her Mother's side. His name was Frank Arrowsmith. He knew of my interest in family history and mentioned that his grandfather had died as result of injury in WW1 but knew nothing about him. The following week I printed out a record for Frank and found his grandfather had been in the 24th Batt. Also noted that time he had been wounded, his name was Alfred Jamess Augustus Stewart. On checking my father's Diary for that date and the entry said "Nov. 22 1915
Things very quiet man injured by piece off periscope rifle entering head. Boat & artillery fire during
afternoon enemy very quiet Turks attacked our trenches at Adesc repulsed without loss to us"
Alfred was taken by hospital ship to Malta where he died, Frank and his wife visited that grave during 2012 in Malta.
It sent shivers down my spine to think that this happened all those years ago and we are all
family today, what a small world.
