Civil (government) registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages began in Ireland in 1864. Deaths were registered by 'registration district' administrative areas which often crossed county borders. You will find a map and a full list of registration districts in our Help & Advice (see useful links)

Death certificates from the early years of civil registration are particularly useful for pinpointing a year of birth which pre-dates civil registration. Certificates usually include the name of the person who registered the death, often a family member.

findmypast also gives you access to the Index to Civil Registration for births, marriages and deaths (see useful links). The index covers the years between 1864 and 1958. The information contained in the index will allow you to order certificates, for a fee, from the General Register Office.
