Chester County is in south east Pennsylvania. It is bordered to the northeast by the Schuylkill River. In 1809, the Pennsylvania General Assembly passed an act to provide for the education of poor children. In 1834, the Public Education Law was passed. This legislated the establishment of free public schools. However, some townships in Chester County still continued to pay for the schooling of poor children as late as 1842. This index comprises the names of teachers who submitted requests to the commissioner’s office to be reimbursed for teaching fees and costs of school supplies while teaching children whose parents could not pay for school.
