Clackmannanshire lies in central Scotland, north of the Firth of Forth and between the historic counties of Perthshire and Fife. Historically, Clackmannanshire sat at a crossroads between the eastern lowlands, the central heartland around Stirling and the routes leading north into Perthshire. Today, Clackmannanshire is sometimes nicknamed ‘The Wee County’ because of its small geographical size, but its strategic location gave it more historical significance than its size might suggest. From the 18th and 19th centuries onwards, Clackmannanshire became an important industrial area for Scotland and was well known for coal mining, brewing, glassmaking and textiles.
