Ireland military pensions and medals 1916-1922 has been created from the records held by the Military Archives in Dublin. The records come from the Military Service Pension Collection (MSPC) and Medals Series.
Military service pensions, allowances, or gratuities were awarded in recognition of those who participated in the Easter Rising (1916) and the War of Independence (1916-1921). Pensions and medals were awarded to, but not limited to, members of the following organisations: Óglaigh na hÉireann, National Army, Irish Republican Army, Irish Volunteers, Irish Citizen Army, Hibernian Rifles, Cumann na mBan, Fianna Éireann, and Connaught Rangers. Awards were given to veterans or their dependents. Two military medals are represented in this collection: 1916 Medal and The Service Medal (1914-1921).
Various pieces of legislation were passed in regards to who was eligible for pension claims including The Army Pensions Acts 1923-1953 and The Military Service Pensions Acts of 1924, 1934, and 1949. Individuals had to submit a claim for the pension or the military medal. Original images of the records can be obtained from the Military Archives website. The original documents will include the original claim application, details about the individual’s service history, and supporting material.
