Mid-Norfolk Family History Society
The Mid-Norfolk Family History Society was formed in September 1994, the initial purpose being to provide a forum for local people with an interest in family history, but not necessarily with genealogical links to this part of the country. Subsequently, the society became a member of The Federation of Family History Societies and to avoid a conflict of interest with the county Norfolk FHS, an arbitrary twelve-mile radius circle was drawn around Dereham and this became the 'Society Area'. Today our membership numbers over 250 with many distant members who find it useful to have links with a small-defined area of the county.
The society is the main contributor to the National Burial Index for Norfolk, with the majority of entries only relating to our area. A search facility of these is available. Another ongoing project is the recording of the Memorial Inscriptions in all the 120 parishes within the area of interest. Approximately half have been recorded, the results of which are presented in booklet form available for purchase.
The society publishes and distributes annually to all members a members interest booklet. In addition members' interests are published in the society newsletter which is published quarterly for which members are encouraged to provide articles of general interest and requests for help and advice.
The society holds its meetings on the third Wednesday of each month (except December) at The Methodist Hall, Dereham. We endeavour to provide an interesting and varied programme of speakers and have a library of family history related material, which local members may take out on loan. Refreshments are provided and visitors are always welcome.
Details of the society's Burial Index, their publications, details of membership and contact details etc are on the website.
